RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
