Powerful Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to stay indoors as powerful gusts strike the nation.

Severe gusts reaching speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused nearly 90,000 properties experiencing outages and forced officials to halt over 100 aircraft departures, as reported by local media.

These gusts are impacting the whole southern region and southern sections of the North Island, as stated by the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have released infrequent severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in key areas including Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been advised to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for more electricity and network failures.

Extensive Impact and Crisis Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting homes predominantly in the South Island, though agencies say that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have reported that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, and power lines and trees have been toppled by the winds.

Across Wellington, a individual was killed after being hit by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services to and from the metropolis have been suspended due to the winds, whereas some roads and libraries are shut down.

At the same time Canterbury officials have issued a crisis declaration, to support emergency management operations.

Strike Action During Extreme Conditions

The wild winds on Thursday come as numerous of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been termed a "major walkout", requesting better pay and working conditions.

But the intense climate has pressured them to change some of their plans, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or cancelled.

Like conditions are impacting Australia, ushering in a heatwave to the remote areas.

Officials have issued flame prohibitions for concern about bushfires.
