Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
